New star on saxophone from London's thriving jazz scene.
Camilla George was born in Eket, Nigeria. From an early age, she was attracted to both African and Western music and grew up with the sounds of Fela Kuti as well as Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker.
As a saxophonist, Camilla George is inextricably linked to London's new jazz scene. Like her contemporaries Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings and Zara McFarlane, she is open to all sorts of current influences so typical of London's metropolitan, hyper-diverse society. Her music is a hypnotic mix of Afro-futurism, hip-hop and jazz. In the process, she demonstrates her political awareness and interest in African history.
