Vardan Hovanissian & Emre Gültekin

BEL     FOLK
A symbol of Turkish-Armenian reconciliation
Since he was initiated by Khatchik Khatchatryan into the miraculous sound of the duduk, Vardan Hovanissian became one of the masters of this instrument that expresses the sound and soul of Armenia like no other. Ten years ago Vardan found a soul mate in the Turkish saz player Emre Gültekin. Vardan Hovanissian and Emre Gültekin symbolise the reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey through the melancholic but hopeful sounds of the Armenian duduk and the saz, Turkey's emblematic instrument. The duo explores the differences between Armenia and Turkey, but also the musical richness that can be found in this turbulent region on the edge of Europe and Asia. From their cross-border friendship they build bridges between different traditions and instruments, playing styles and languages in an album that shows how enriching living together can be in difference. They propose traditional songs as well as new contemporary compositions. As a guest the group brings along the Indian singer Malabika Brahma, who excels as a powerful singer.
